Overview

This chart displays the Iowa public school Pre-Kindergarten to 12th grade (PK12) enrollments from the last eleven academic years (starting from the most recent year of the COE report). The data includes the count and percentage of students by both Academic District and race/ethnicity categories.

Over the years,School Districts consolidate and dissappear. As this is a "Trends" report, we use the list of Districts from the the most recent year of data, for the base line. This is why the state and district student totals typically match between the "Enrollment Trends" report and the "Enrollment" reports for the most recent year. While comparing previous year's "Enrollment Trends" reports may not neccessarily match the "Enrollment" reports because some districts have been reconfiguredd each year.

Data Source

The data source, for this chart and accompanying table, is the Student Reporting in Iowa (SRI), fall submission. Counts and percentages are based on students enrolled and attending in a district as of October 1st, of the reported year. The data reflects the race/ethnicity categories, effective since the 2009-2010 academic year (see below).

Definitions

1. Academic District:  the district where the student is enrolled and attending as of October 1st, of the reported year
2. Iowa's Race/Ethnicity Reporting Categories:   starting in 2009-2010, all Iowa students identified as Hispanic ethnicity (regardless of race) are reported as "Hispanic", and new race/ethnicity sub-groups were added. The new standards are consistent with Census reporting and other national data sets
3. 2008-2009 Academic Year and Earlier:
   • African American
   • American Indian
   • Asian or Pacific Islander
   • Hispanic
   • White
4. 2009-2010 School Year and Later:
   • African American
   • American Indian
   • Asian
   • Hispanic
   • Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
   • White
   • Two or More Races

Data Visualization

1. A Bar Chart showing the number and total of the race/ethnicity populations for the specified year
2. A Table showing the identical data in tableture form, with the addition of total of students for each year

Selection Tools

1. Race/Ethnicity Enrollments Color Key:  the user clicks on a Race/Ethnicity Enrollment, and the corresponding line (race/ethnicity) in the bar chart is selected
2. Select School Districts Filter:   the user can select one or more specific shool districts to review
3. Select Race/Ethnicity Filter:   the user can select one or more race/ethnicity groups in one of the tables and the bar chart will be filtered to show only those corresponding segments. De-select the race/ethnicity groups in the table to return the bar chart to its previous state.
