Overview

This chart displays the count and percentage of Kindergarten to 12th Grade (K-12) students enrolled during specific years. The students are grouped by common student population sub-groups, including race/ethnicity, gender, and special program eligibility (examples of programs would be Free Lunch, Reduced Lunch, English Language Learners and others). User desired yearly data can be viewed by selecting the State totals, Enrollment Category (size), and by selecting one or more specific School Districts.

Data Source

The data source, for this page, is the Student Reporting in Iowa (SRI), fall submission. Counts and percentages are based on students enrolled and attending in a district as of October 1st, of the reported year.

Definitions

1. School District(s):  the district where the student is enrolled and attending as of October 1st, of the reported year
2. Free Lunch:  the federal government-sponsored lunch program where the full cost is provided by federal funds; a student's eligibility for this program is determined through Direct Certification based on a number of conditions, including residing in foster care, with mighrant families, or homeless or completion of an application
3. Reduced Lunch:  the federal government-sponsored lunch program where a partial cost of the school meal is provided by the federal government
4. Free or Reduced Lunch:  students who are currently eligible for either the Free Lunch program or the Reduced Lunch; this category is typically used to easily identify a certain socio-enonomic category of students
5. English Language Learners (ELL):  Students whose primary/native language is not English and/or students whose proficiency in English puts them at risk for not being academically successful in an English-only classroom are eligible for an English Language Instructional Program ; Student eligibility is counted even if a waiver is requested by the parent and the student does not receive services in a Language Instructional Education Program (LIEP)
6. All:  all of the students fitting the current filters configuration if no filters are selected, this count is typically the State total
7. Gender:  breakdown of students by Female and Male
8. Race/Ethnicity:  since 2009-2010, all Iowa students identified as "Hispanic" ethnicity, (regardless of race), are reported as "Hispanic", and new race/ethnicity sub-groups were added; the new standards are consistent with Census reporting and other national data sets
9. 2009-2010 School Year and Later:
   • African American
   • American Indian
   • Asian
   • Hispanic
   • Hawaiian or Pacific Islander
   • White
   • Two or More Races
