2022 Condition of Education Report

About the Condition of Education

The Department is excited to release the 6th on-line version of the Annual Condition of Education (COE). The COE includes information on Iowa students, educators, and school systems.

First released in 1990, 33 editions have provided a rich set of information to examine educational trends across multiple decades. Several metrics are now available online adding dynamic features to tables and figures. Local district results are accessible for the first time.

The online COE will expand and include additional content and functionality.

Assessment

Presents students’ participation rates, proficiency rates and average scale scores on the Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) and Dynamic Learning Maps (DLM) state assessments by year and grade.

K-12 Enrollment

Reports current and historical enrollment data from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Interactive filters allow examination of specific school districts by enrollment category (size) or Area Education Agency (AEA).

PK-12 Enrollment Trends

Presents enrollment trends, from Pre-School (PK) to 12th grade. Interactive filters allow the user to view district trends by race/ethnicity, grade, and gender.

High School Course-Taking

Presents students’ course-taking data for the two most recent high school graduating classes (those enrolled in Iowa public high schools in each of the four years from grades 9 to 12). The selected courses are: Algebra II, higher-level mathematics, chemistry, physics, high-quality computer science and world languages.

Staffing

Displays staff data by district including positions, characteristics, salary, and benefits.

1.	K-12 Enrollment by District	Bar chart visualizing counts and percentages of characteristics comprising student population, in the entire state or by selected school district(s). Student characteristics include: gender, race/ethnicity, and a sub-set of Iowa assistance programs. Controls allow selection of distinct years and specific districts for comparison.
2.	K-12 Enrollment by Size & District	Bar chart similar to above, with the addition of filters to sort/group school districts by "Enrollment Category" (or size of district.) This chart might be used to identify a specific school district, and then compare that district's students against students in other districts of similar size.
3.	K-12 Enrollment by AEA & District	Bar chart similar to above, with the addition of filters to sort/group school districts by which "Area Education Agency" (or AEA) they are part of. This chart might be used to identify a specific school district, and then compare that district's students against students in other districts within the same AEA.

1.	High School Course-Taking by District	Bar chart visualizing the percentage of students in each of subgroup who took at least one course in a selected area. Student subgroups include: all students, gender, race/ethnicity and program groups such as English learners (EL), students with disabilities (IEP) and students who are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (FRL).
2.	High School Course-Taking by Size & District	Bar chart similar to the one above, with the addition of filters to sort/group school districts by “Enrollment Category” (or district size). This chart might be used to show course-taking for a specific district and then compare the course-taking patterns in other districts of similar size.
3.	High School Course-Taking by AEA & District	Bar chart similar to the charts above, with the addition of filters to sort/group school districts by “Area Education Agency (AEA)”. This chart might be used to show course-taking for a specific district and then compare the course-taking patterns in other districts within the same AEA.

1.	Staff Characteristics by Group, Position, District	Table containing data on staff characteristics such as age, gender, advanced degree, minority, experience and average total salary. Controls allow selection of staff group, staff position, year and specific school district(s).
2.	Staff Characteristics by Size and District	Table containing data on staff characteristics such as age, gender, advanced degree, minority, experience and average total salary. Controls provide selection of districts by "Enrollment Category" (size), allowing the user to compare districts of similar size.
3.	Staff Characteristics by AEA and District	Table containing data on staff characteristics such as age, gender, advanced degree, minority, experience and average total salary. Controls provide selection of districts by area education agencies (AEAs), allowing the user to compare districts within specific AEAs.
4.	Staff Salary and Benefits Comparison	Scatter plot visualizing staff average yearly total salary against average non-salary benefits. Controls provide selection of staff group, staff position, year and specific school district(s), allowing specific comparison of type of staff (such as teachers, principals, superintendents, etc.).
5.	Staff Age Trends	Line chart visualizing staff counts across age interval continuum. Controls provide selection of staff group, staff position, year and specific school district(s), allowing comparison of staff type (such as teachers, principals, superintendents, etc.) over the years.
6.	Age Distribution of First Year Staff vs All Staff	Bar chart visualizing staff counts across age interval continuum for first year staff and all staff. Controls provide selection of staff group, staff position, year, and specific school district(s), allowing comparison of staff type (such as teachers, principals, superintendents, etc.) within a year.
